It comes from the Saturnalia, a Roman festival celebrating the god Saturn and the Sun. A meal was then shared between masters and slaves and a bean was slipped into a cake or a wafer whose round and golden aspect recalled the sun. The one who fell on it was thus designated king of the feast.
