The world’s largest museum
The Louvre is an iconic palace on the right bank of the Seine with a storied history dating back to the 12th century, when it served as a defensive castle. The Louvre went on to serve intermittently as a royal residence, with nearly every monarch expanding upon the vast grounds. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum to display the nation's masterpieces and in 1793 the Musée du Louvre opened. Today, nearly 8 million visitors a year pass under the contemporary glass pyramid to explore the museum’s extensive galleries. The Louvre is home to such iconic works as the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa.
