Geography of Water and Liberty
Echoes from the mid 19th Century to Today’s World
The access to clean water, as highlighted by the UN Water Report of 2019, is a world issue related to the enforcement of human rights, the improvement of public health, the increase of environmental protection, the fight against poverty, and the development of sustainable economies. This year’s Semaine de la langue française et de la francophonie gives us the opportunity to reflect on what the French language and culture owe to water, from words and expressions, to literature and cinema. This workshop will focus on a book by Elisée Reclus, French geographer, writer and political activist, Histoire d’un ruisseau [A Stream’s Story], published in 1869. The style of this hidden gem, conjugating like no other poetic images and scientific observations, educates his readers on the use and abuse of water by humanity. Following a stream, Reclus embarks us on a meditation where liberty rhymes with a deeper appreciation for an irreplaceable good. Celebrated by the most renowned scientists of his time, such as Charles Darwin, Reclus gifted us with a book at the crossroad of natural sciences, political theories, and arts, exploring therefore the infinite levels on which humanity and water affect each other.
